Camp Lejeune manages eleven freshwater fishing ponds which offer an opportunity
to catch bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.
The physical setting of each recreational pond is conducive to other
outdoor activities such as family picnics, bird watching, and general relaxation
that provides an enhanced quality of life for military personnel, their
dependents, and civilians serving the Installation.
In recent years, a focused management effort has been made to improve the
quality of recreational fishing opportunities by improving fish stocks and
through the control of invasive aquatic weeds.
These efforts have significantly increased the recreational use of the
fishing ponds by
increasing catch rates and enhancing the aesthetic qualities of the ponds.
These recreational fishing ponds are managed for the
production of largemouth bass, bluegill, red ear sunfish, and channel catfish.
Current practices include:
·
Control invasive aquatic weeds.
·
Maintain
shoreline vegetation to promote access for fishing.
·
Manage
water quality through liming/fertilization and obtain annual water chemistry to
support same.
·
Manage
fish populations to maximize fish biomass and sustain annual harvests.
·
Select the
fish species best adapted to local environmental variables when stocking.
·
Harvest at
appropriate levels to maintain productivity.
· Consider cyclic renovation projects to maintain shoreline depths and water control.
