The same surface waters that provide the setting for the world’s finest amphibious assault training also support an abundance of marine resources. The fragile salt and estuarine waters surrounding Camp Lejeune provide bountiful harvests of shellfish and fin fish, which are an important part of the local commercial and recreational fishing industry. Well aware of the consequences of water quality degradation, the Base has initiated a multi-faceted campaign to abate all types of water pollution, which includes involvement in such state, federal and local initiatives. From its operation of five water treatment plants providing drinking water to over 63,000 customers, Camp Lejeune is acutely aware of its responsibility to safeguard the public water supply. The Base’s water resource planning efforts include a wellhead management plan, with designated wellhead protection areas. In addition to state-mandated finished water sampling, raw water supply wells are tested annually for volatile organic compounds.
