Mourning Dove

All avid recreational hunters look forward to opening day.  In eastern North Carolina and on Camp Lejeune, the first day of hunting is opening day of dove season.  In 1995, an aggressive effort was made to improve habitat conditions and availability of suitable hunting areas for this species.  Utilizing old agricultural areas in the Greater Sandy Run Area, Camp Lejeune created a mosaic of 50 acres of managed landscape which provides good cover and foraging habitat for doves and excellent shooting opportunities.  Other forest openings along powerline rights-of-way and secondary roads provide additional shooting opportunities.

Management strategies for mourning dove are divided into three basic components:  habitat creation and maintenance, data collection (harvest information), and population census (breeding season call counts).  Current practices for mourning dove are as follows:

·    Continue the practice of wildlife clearing plantings that provide beneficial foraging opportunities for dove.

·    Continue improvements in dove management areas.

·    Monitor harvest data for shifts in demography as it may relate to available foraging opportunities and other life requisites

     ·  Coordinate enforcement of wildlife regulations with harvest and  population objectives.
