Marine Corp Base, Camp Lejeune, with donations of adaptable equipment from the Paralyzed Veterans of America, has become the most accessible military Installation for persons with spinal cord injuries.  Why is this important?  Because it is about the ability, not the disability!

The availability of adaptive equipment for recreational hunting and fishing removes significant obstacles for persons with disabilities, and provides the opportunity for these individuals to enjoy the outdoors.

Access improvements for hunting include four pop-up style hunting blinds and a mechanized elevating hunting stand.  The pop-up blinds are all wheel-chair accessible.  The elevating stand or Huntmaster is a self-contained unit that will be brought to and from the field when being used.

A system for reservations will be in place prior to the 2002-2003 hunting season for use of the hunting stand and pop-up blinds.  Interested individuals must meet state and Base licensing requirements prior to hunting aboard Camp Lejeune and/or using the stand.  License information and where to purchase a license for hunting on Camp Lejeune can be found at www.lejeune.usmc.mil/gwarden/.

Access improvements for water-based recreation and fishing currently include the availability of a pontoon boat for use on the New River and its tributaries.  The Marine Corps Community Services Department maintains the pontoon boat.  Visit their site http://www.mccslejeune.com or contact the Gottschalk Marina for information.

During the 2002 spring turkey season, Mossy Oak Productions Hunting the Country Series teamed with Camp Lejeune and the Paralyzed Veterans of America on a turkey hunt.  Hard work and a little cooperation from the turkeys yielded a great hunt and some good memories.  Look for the video on or about Veterans Day this fall!
